Lightning Protection Systems – How Do They Work?
Lightning protection systems in Ohio, and generally in the US, are designed to protect buildings and other structures from damage caused by lightning strikes. These systems typically consist of a network of conductors, grounding systems, and surge protection devices that work together to divert the electrical energy from a lightning strike away from the structure and into the ground.
The main components of a lightning protection system include:
- Air terminals or lightning rods, are installed on the roof or at the top of the structure and are designed to attract a lightning strike.
- Conductors, which are connected to the air terminals and run down the sides of the structure to the grounding system.
- Grounding system, which is typically made up of a series of rods or plates buried in the ground. The grounding system is connected to the conductors and is designed to safely dissipate the electrical energy from a lightning strike into the earth.
Lightning protection systems are typically installed and maintained by certified professionals, who follow the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and guidelines. It’s important to note that lightning protection systems are not 100% effective, but they can significantly reduce the risk of damage to a building or structure in case of a lightning strike.

Most lightning strikes in Ohio occur in the western and southern parts of the state, particularly in the area around Toledo and Dayton, and in the southern parts of the state such as Cincinnati and Columbus. These areas have more thunderstorm activity and thus more lightning strikes compared to the northern regions.
The Midwest region, in general, is known to have more thunderstorm activity and lightning strikes than other regions in the US, due to the warm moist air coming from the Gulf of Mexico colliding with the cold dry air from the Great Lakes.
